The Gay Bestie Speaks: Voyage to Love

The journey to loving yourself may just be one of the hardest journeys any one of us may take. For me personally it took over 20 years to accomplish self-love and appreciation. As the clock was preparing to turn 12 AM for the mark of 2014 like many of you I was dressed for the affair and surround by friends, but then things took a turn. In the midst of the celebration it was brought to my attention how one of my closest girlfriends is emotionally where I was just a few years ago. I was quickly reminded how we all mature in our own timing. She’s currently in the stage of finding her worth and thanks to a little tequila in my system I couldn’t hold back the tears. Yeah, I sure did start sobbing over my honorary sister.

She reminded me in that moment achieving self-love is a process that not everyone acquires at the same time. We’ve all seen it. You know those who don’t recognize their own value or worth. Even I at one point had it all twisted. For example, before I came out the closet years ago I always felt like I had to be a little nicer or a little friendlier to those surrounding me. I remember the days when I yearned for compliments about myself, so I could see them for myself. Let me be the first to confirm that it never worked. It took the frustration of not liking myself to find loving myself. I had to embrace the pain of all my flaws to see myself for who I really am. The pain felt unbearable, but proof that I am still here today reminded me that anyone can accomplish it.

To my dolls both young and seasoned love isn’t easy, but loving yourself first make the road a little lighter. If you’re currently at the stage of searching for someone to love you the best place to start is with yourself. Falling in love with your flaws opens the doors for others to the same. Once reaching that self-appreciation there is no other feeling that compares. The admiration is seen by others and feels by far more fulfilling almost better than sex (lol). In all honesty it’s a life changing experience that every human is given the opportunity to achieve. The only question is how long is; how long is it going to take you to begin the journey?
