#TBT – Throwback Thursday: Music Mix

TBT The Artist

Wassup People? Welcome to Throwback Thursday (#TBT) Music Mix , My name is King Braswell and this is my first contribution to Ms. Nix in the Mix and I just want you to know this will be the first of many more with that said… let’s get to the music.

So you can get to know me a little bit let me just tell you – I am an 80’s baby, 1980 to be exact. There were so many great artists during that decade and most of them performed Pop and R&B music and today I want to pay one of them homage for #TBT. It took me all day to pick someone music was/is a huge part of my life and there were so many great artist…let’s see here… the Gap Band, Morris Day and the Time, New Edition, Luther Vandross, Janet, MJ (Michael Jackson), SOS Band, NWA, Eric B and Rakim, Public Enemy, 2 Live Crew, and the list goes on. Who doesn’t love one or all of those artists?

But there was one artist who I will call my favorite and this performer has been for quite some time. That artist is none other than Prince, a.k.a. The Artist, a.k.a. The Artist Formally Known As…well you get the point.

TBT Prince

I don’t know about you guys, but this dude changed the game big time. Name a male musician, at the time that could wear women’s clothes and still get a pass in the hood. In the 80’s, Prince released a string of hit albums…Dirty Mind, Controversy, the one and only Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day, and quite a few more. Singles from those albums included Do Me Baby, 1999, When Doves Cry, Raspberry Beret, and many more. My Favorite Prince album (as well as one of my overall favorite) is Purple Rain. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I listened to that album from beginning to end. I can remember being four years old sitting in my aunt’s house with my older cousins’ in a zone listening to The Beautiful Ones. When the title track came on I didn’t know what he was talking about, but it didn’t matter, the song Purple Rain just took me to another place and still does to this day.

TBT Prince Roger Nelson

Now Prince is old school, but he is still actively making new music and touring the world today, and I plan on catching him live one of these days. He is now 55 years old, the music is a little different, but you know Prince, he was always different. Some of his new stuff is kind of left field, but I still love his passion for music and his independence. He owns his own label, writes all of his own music, and pays for his own tours. Prince is what I call a “real artist” and not very many exist anymore – if you know what I mean. Well, that’s all I got folks, hope you enjoyed this throwback Thursday tribute to music. Need you to tell me one thing, well maybe two, Did you like Prince, and what was your Favorite song from him in the eighties?
